Test: Fanatec Podium Steering Wheel Porsche 911 GT3 R

At Fanatec, there are two philosophies. Either you buy a complete steering wheel that you just have to install on your base, or you configure it with a hub, shift paddles and a wheel. The model we received nevertheless has a small variation since it is also equipped with a button support.

Once on the track, your main problem is having quick access to all the controls without using the keyboard. For example: windshield wipers, engine mapping, Traction Control, ABS, pit limiter, etc.

With 10 buttons, 2 toggle switches (2 ways), a 2-axis analog stick, two 7-way switches and 2 switches, you will have plenty of freedom to assign the essential controls as you see fit.

The “Button Module Endurance has a 2,7-inch OLED screen, providing instant information such as the gear engaged or the speed. In terms of gear paddles, we are at the top of the range.

You have six available. Four are magnetic (made of carbon) and two are analog. Typically, analog paddles are assigned to the clutch and handbrake (if not equipped). The two central units are used for the speeds. Note that this kit has GT paddles but also Single seat (smaller) to accommodate a smaller wheel.

On track

We tested this wheel on iRacing, Assetto Corsa Competizione, Dirt Rally 2.0 and Raceroom. In racing conditions, it's a joy! The gear paddles offer real driving comfort, the wheel is very pleasant and all the buttons are very quickly accessible. We also tried the experiment with a VR headset and again, it is very easy to access the different controls. If you are equipped with a Fanatec base and you mainly drive a GT, you can go for it with your eyes closed!

Verdict

This steering wheel is a success. The materials are of excellent quality and the assembly is simple. It of course has the quick release system (system which allows you to change the wheel at any time) and offers real driving comfort thanks to its button support. The must of the moment!
