Test – Logitech G923 Trueforce Steering Wheel

Little reminder

The G923 is not a Direct Drive steering wheel, the power of the motor – and therefore its FFB (Force Feedback) – is transmitted to the rim of the steering wheel using one (or more) belt(s) or gears. It is part of the category of so-called “general public” steering wheels like the T300 or the T-GT from Thrustamaster.

We're not going to lie to you, when the G923 was announced, we were a little taken aback. Indeed, the new addition to the Logitech range is visually similar to the G25 (except for all the buttons on the wheel), the star of the end of the year... 2006!

We are in 2006 and the “star” steering wheel is the G25!

As a reminder, the G25, then the G27 (2010) were the heyday of the first simracers. At the time, this steering wheel/pedal assembly was exceptional, we had never been able to feel so much pleasure driving in a game. It was equipped with force feedback, a pedal board worthy of the name and an H-shaped box that can become sequential by turning a button, without forgetting its paddles.

In short, the best! Yes, but that was at the time of PlayStation 2 and Gran Tursimo 3! (We remind you that the PlayStation 5 is arriving this year and the next GT is #7!). This is why, before even installing the beast on our chassis, we first checked that it was not a trick!

Well no, this G923 has the same design as its illustrious predecessor in terms of the base and the pedal board. The only thing missing is the gearbox. On the other hand, the wheel receives a big update since you have available all the controls of a PS4 pad in the version that we received plus a very practical small rotary wheel and a + and - switch.

Here we are this time in 2010 with the G27.

Note that the PS4 version that we have is also PC compatible and that it is possible to map all of the keys. As for the pedal set, again, it is the same as that of the G25, but this time with a small subtlety on the brake pedal: the addition (inside the cylinder) of a progressive spring for simulate resistance at the end of the stroke.

The more you press the pedal, the more resistance it offers. This pedalboard is still quite pleasant if we consider the average range in which it is located. There are much better options, but it's not the same budget.

Trueforce technology

In fact, the real novelty of this steering wheel is the arrival of Trueforce technology. It is meant to respond to in-game physics to generate real-time responses of greater fidelity. However, it is not compatible with all games. During our test, we were able to vary the “Trueforce” on Assetto Corsa Competizione but not on Project Cars 2 for example.

Before going further into details, let's remember that Logitech is a partner of the team McLaren en F1…but know that Lando Norris absolutely does not use a Logitech steering wheel when doing virtual races and that says a lot about the quality of the steering wheel that we are offering you today. You will have understood, this G923 is no longer in the game at all! All of its technology is outdated.

Today, for the same price, you can get a set from Thrustmaster that is light years away from the G923. This Trueforce technology offers no interest on the track, worse it interferes with an already has-been force feedback. But that's not all: it's impossible to change the 28cm wheel, so you'll have to make do. Good luck in rally !

The base of the 923 G2020 is exactly the same as the 25 G2006.

In addition, the FFB is provided by the same engine as on the G29 (2015) and still saturates just as much. The feeling on the track is again very mediocre. On Assetto Corsa Competizione, let's say that we managed to keep the car on the track, on GT Sport too. On the other hand, on Project Cars 2, it was undriveable!

We are therefore not going to waste your time by going into more details because, ultimately, all this is not of much interest!

Verdict

Incredible that Logitech is serving us the same soup (remastered) as 14 years ago! This steering wheel is totally outdated and overpriced for what it offers. If you get into simracing to discover a universe that is unfamiliar to you, and which we have been talking to you about here for months, explaining to you that simracing is close to reality, you will, rightly, laugh in our faces. !

Points +

  • He is pretty
  • The wheel is leather
  • The pedal board is correct

Dots -

  • A return of force from another age
  • Impossible to change the wheel
  • More than 10 years behind the competition

Price: approx. 400€

Compatible: PS4,One,PC

On the left, the PS4/PC version, on the right One/PC.

PS: We carried out a large comparison on the site in March “What equipment to get started with? ". Take a look to find the “right” steering wheel to start with. In this selection, you will not find a Logitech steering wheel. There was already a reason for that.
