Full of opportunism and daring in the face of his competitors, Chaz Mostert (Walkinshaw Andretti United) took the 17e victory of his career after braving the elements on a completely crazy Sunday.

Seventh on the grid and off to a good start when the lights went out, the last winner of the Bathurst 1000 was progressing well in the peloton and quickly positioned himself at the gates of the Top 3. After 19 laps, he was behind by just over 3 seconds on the leader and poleman of the day Brodi Kostecki (Erebus Motorsport).

Fallen back in the rankings after the first salvo of supplies around the 25the lap, Chaz Mostert took advantage of the battles at the front after the Safety Car returned to the pit lane at 29e passage to grab a few positions. Well helped by the duel between Broc Feeney (Triple Eight) and Anthony Davison (Dick Johnson Racing), “Mozzie” managed to get back on the leading group and thus place himself in ambush for 2e racing part.

Temporarily 3e behind Brodie Kostecki and Anton de Pasquale during the restart at 51e lap, Chaz Mostert took advantage of his super soft tires to drop his two rivals on the spot. The hardest part then seemed to be over but that was without taking into account the appearance of rain for the last 13 laps of the 2e weekend race in Sydney.

Passing through the stands at 66e lap to put on the rain tires, the Walkinshaw Andretti United driver saw the race neutralized by the 3e Safety Car of the day, this time deployed by Jack Le Brocq (Matt Stone Racing) who made a mistake after deciding to stay on softs.

The race was then restarted for 2 laps but Chaz Mostert was not going to give in to the pressure from Brodie Kostecki and Anton de Pasquale, thus signing his first triumph of the year, on the 17th.e in career. A perfect operation for him since he took control of the championship, a first for 6 years, to the great regret of Shane van Gisbergen (Triple Eight), happy 6e this Sunday after leaving 21e and have counted up to one lap behind.
