The question was not who, but when. When would Shane van Gisbergen win the 2nd Supercars title? The answer was the Gold Coast 500. With his victory at Surfers Paradise, the New Zealander became the 11th driver to win two consecutive Supercars championships.
The pilot of the Red Bull Ampol Racing won its third Supercars title, after those acquired in 3 and 2016, all obtained with Triple Eight. This is the 2021th drivers' championship for Triple Eight, putting it on par with Dick Johnson Racing. Van Gisbergen's path to the 10 title is the result of a series of 2022 victories, a record in the Oceanian championship.
The 33-year-old took victory in Surfers Paradise by a margin of 16,8 seconds over David Reynolds, after a controlled race from start to finish. "We had to beat just one car to make it, but we killed everyone (sic), said Shane van Gisbergen upon arrival. It was incredible, it was a big battle at the start, Dave [Reynolds] was driving impressively. I enjoyed racing with him, it's been a while. » The now three-time Supercars champion of course thanked his team for this glorious season. “Thanks to Red Bull Ampol Racing. What a year, it was a lot of fun! It's certainly pretty special to see the guys, all the effort they've put in, our cars are performing so well. I'm delighted, it's hard to put it into words. »
