He would have liked to get the title on the track but it doesn't matter, Shane van Gisbergen is a double Supercars champion! After 2016, the New Zealander won a second crown this Sunday after the cancellation of the last race of the four meetings in a row in Sydney.

Second on the grid, the Triple Eight driver was in a very good position to challenge Nick Percat (Brad Jones Racing) for victory and be crowned 2021 champion. In the end, SVG didn't need to try hard. In the pouring rain of Sydney, the start was given behind the safety car. Alas, after five laps of speculation the race management decided to suspend the race before canceling it definitively.

As a result, Shane van Gisbergen was able to return to his garage and celebrate with his team the second crown of his career, five years after the first. A crown that could not be more logical given the high-flying season achieved by the Kiwi.

Claimant to succeed Scott McLaughlin who left in IndyCar with Penske, Shane van Gisbergen would win in the first six races (2 at Bathurst, 3 at Sandown and 1 in Tasmania) thus setting the tempo for the rest of the season. Having become the favorite, SVG then scored three podiums before following up with four new successes (2 in Darwin and 2 in Townsville).

Well ahead of the championship ahead of his teammate Jamie Whincup, the now double champion would subsequently obtain four new victories, including the latest this Saturday in Sydney at the end of an incredible comeback and thus complete his campaign with 14 successes in 29 starts.

At 32, Shane van Gisbergen became the 14th driver in Supercars history to win at least two titles, joining names like Jamie Whincup, Allan Moffat and Craig Lowndes.
