Sandown, C1 – Injured, Van Gisbergen heroic winner

Touched, but certainly not sunk afterwards a broken collarbone during a fall while mountain biking, Shane van Gisbergen (Holden) commanded the admiration of the Supercars paddock this Saturday March 20 at Sandown.

The New Zealander, who underwent hyperbaric treatment and painkillers in the days preceding the second meeting of the 2021 season, was worried by a disappointing 17th place in qualifying. However, the championship leader very quickly reassured about his state of health.

Helped by a steering wheel positioned lower and closer to the body, the Triple Eight driver began an effective comeback, marked in particular by an inspired double overtake a short distance from the finish on his teammate Jamie Whincup (Holden) and Chaz Mostert (Holden ):

He got rid of leader Cameron Waters (Holden) at the start of the final loop, to sign his 43rd victory in Supercars:
