Scott McLaughlin leads the championship with his success in Adelaide

Beaten yesterday by Jamie Whincup (Red Bull Holden Racing – Holden Commodore), Scott McLaughlin (DJR Team Penske – Ford Mustang) did not miss his chance to pocket the second race of the opening meeting of the 2020 Supercars in Adelaide.

However, the winner of the day had seen his main rival Shane van Gisbergen (Red Bull Holden Racing), who started from pole, regained his possession in the pits at the first stop after having lost it at the start. The Kiwi driver then managed to open a small gap sufficient to keep the outgoing champion at bay.

But a poor fuel supply during the second stop forced van Gisbergen to make an unscheduled third stop, giving the advantage back to McLaughlin who made it a double blow by also taking the lead in the championship.

Worse for van Gisbergen, a broken front right suspension ruined his hopes of catching up with the DJR Team Penske driver. Chaz Mostert (Walkinshaw Andretti United – Holden) and Cameron Waters (Tickford Racing – Ford) completed the podium in this second race.

Winner yesterday, Jamie Whincup was unable to keep up with the leaders, also losing time in traffic after the first stop. The seven-time champion of the discipline finished 5th.
