Supercars-C2: Chaz Mostert returns to victory at Phillip Island

It was once again a Ford Falcon which showed itself to its advantage this Sunday on the Australian circuit of Phillip Island. But if we were waiting for the copies of the DJR Team Penske from the McLaughlin – Coulthard pair, it is finally Prodrive Racing Australia and Chaz Mosert who emerged as winners.

The tandem of the team of Dick Johnson and Roger Penske had dominated the start of the race quickly neutralized under safety car regime on the first lap after an incident involving Nick Percat (Brad Jones Racing – Holden Commodore), Will Davison (Tekno Autosports – Holden) and Jason Bright (Britek Motorsport – Ford Falcon).

Having taken the lead at the start, Fabian Coulthard took the opportunity to return to the pits, unlike his teammate McLaughlin who took control of the race.

The New Zealander maintains the advantage until his pit stop, which will be followed by a second intervention of the safety car, following the punctures of Shane van Gisbergen and Jamie Whincup (Red Bull Holden Racing Team – Holden), but also Michael Caruso (Nissan Motorsport – Nissan Altima).

Using a shift strategy, McLaughlin did not stop during this second neutralization, and continued his domination before returning to the pits one last time on the 42nd lap.

Having returned beyond the top 20, the DJR Team Penske driver will not be able to return to the front, now locked down by the Prodrive Racing Australia duo Chaz Mostert and Mark Winterbottom, whose second stop during the second neutralization was sufficient in terms of fuel. to see the finish.

The two teammates signed a double for PRA and preceded the Holden – Erebus Motorsport of David Reynolds on the podium. James Moffat (GRM – Holden) and Lee Holdsworth (Charlie Schwerkolt Racing – Holden) complete the top 5.

The first Holden Red Bull of Shane van Gisbergen finished 16th ahead of the Ford of Fabian Coulthard, whose drive-through for leaving the pit lane while the red light was on ruined the last hopes.
