Shane van Gisbergen (Triple Eight) won the first race of the weekend in Townsville. The leader of the Supercars championship achieved his pole position and achieved the 48th success of his career, already the 9th this season, in a race controlled from start to finish.

Under the checkerboard, Shane Gisbergen is more than 7 seconds ahead of his teammate Jamie Whincup. Anton De Pasquale (Dick Johnson Racing) completes the podium, 30 seconds behind the winner. Mark Winterbottom (Team 18) for his part made the big comeback of the day with 11 places. Starting 21st, the 2015 champion reached the finish line in 10th. Conversely, Will Davison (Dick Johnson), who started 3rd, fell to 9th place.
The race was marked by a great battle between Brodie Kostecki (Erebus Motorsport), Cameron Waters (Tickford Racing) and Mark Winterbottom (Team 18). A battle won by the second city, author of a great maneuver to gain the upper hand over its two adversaries and cross the line in 8th position.
