Van Gisbergen falls to Whincup and Mostert

Winner of the first six races and equaling the record for consecutive victories at the start of the season, Shane van Gisbergen finally tasted “defeat”.

This Sunday, the Triple Eight driver saw his teammate Jamie Whincup and Chaz Mostert (Walkinshaw Andretti United) beat him on the track.

For the first race of the day, Jamie Whincup won in style. Despite his good start from 2nd place on the grid, the Australian remained behind Cameron Waters (Tickford Racing). If the latter was able to widen the gap a little, the man from Triple Eight gradually increased his pace.

Helped by the return to the front of his teammate, Jamie Whincup took advantage of the stopping window to change the race. Coming out behind Waters, the Melbourne native managed to get away from him at the start of the 25th lap of the race.

Cameron Waters fell back to 4th, Jamie Whincup then had to hold SVG behind him during the end of the race to get his first victory since last August, the 123rd of his career, ahead of his teammate and Will Davison (Dick Johnson Racing).

The third race of the weekend was a bit more complicated for Shane van Gisbergen. Only seventh on the grid, the New Zealander saw Chaz Mostert climb to the highest step of the podium, thus ending a drought of more than 2 years.

This first victory with Walkinshaw Andretti United, Mostert went to get it alone like a grown-up.

The driver of Commodore No. 25 grilled pole sitter Cameron Waters as soon as the lights went out. Very fit on this Symmons Plains track, the Australian showed solidity during Race 3.

Quickly sheltered from a possible return of the peloton, Chaz Mostert was never threatened and crossed the finish line with more than 10 seconds ahead of the two men from Dick Johnson Racing, Anton De Pasquales and Will Davison, with Shane van Gisbergen settling for 6th behind Jamie Whincup.

In the championship, SVG logically maintains the lead with 865 points, 139 more than his teammate. Chaz Mostert is on the podium 165 lengths from the leader.
