FIA F3 World Cup – Russell on pole in Macau

António Félix da Costa (Carlin) may have completed the best lap yesterday in Q1, but his performance was not enough against the young guard of the F3 European. The 2012 winner of the Macau F3 Grand Prix in 2012 had to lose this Friday in Q2 against George Russell (Hitech GP) and Callum Ilott (Van Amersfoort Racing).

Best time in free practice earlier in the morning, Ilott held first place in the session for a long time, pushing through session interruptions caused by Daiki Sasaki (B-Max Racing Team) and Maximilian Günther (SJM Theodore Racing by Prema ).

But the Carlin pilot could do nothing against the last effort of Russell, author a best lap in 2'10″100, enough to beat Ilott by 370 thousandths. On the second row, António Félix da Costa will start alongside his Carlin teammate Sérgio Sette Câmara.

Kenta Yamashita (ThreeBond with T-Sport) and Jake Hughes (Carlin) will share the third row ahead of Maximilian Günther and Felix Rosenqvist (SJM Theodore Racing by Prema), double title holder and only eighth.

Anthoine Hubert (Van Amersfoort Racing) will start the qualifying race, scheduled for tomorrow morning at 6:50 a.m. French time, from 14th position.
