F2: Soucek is almost there

Mikhail Aleshin won the second race at Oschersleben but it was Andy Soucek who had the best performance of the weekend. Already winner of the first race, the Spanish driver was able to get the better of Julien Jousse to claim eight points for second place during the second race. Starting third, Soucek took advantage of the first chicane of the race to follow Aleshin and drop off Jousse. The three men then remained wheel to wheel throughout the event.

Julien Jousse is back in the game after dropping out in the first race, having moved up to fourth place in the general classification. Formula 2. But it is Andy Soucek who leaves Oschersleben with the highest total of points (18), being one race away from the title. Indeed, if he maintains his gap on his pursuers during the first race at Imola on September 19, and even more so if he wins, Andy Soucek will officially be F2 champion. Ultimately, the Spaniard will inherit the reward of being able to test drive a Williams F1.

« It wasn?t the best start to my career, commented Andy Soucek after the race. I saw the two drivers in front of me fighting for first place. I took advantage of it by taking the interior. Julien was close but didn't close the door for me, otherwise we would have made a mistake. It was risky for the championship, but these eight points will be very important. »

For his part, by scoring only six points this weekend, Julien Jousse occupies fourth place in the championship, two points behind Robert Wickens and four points behind Mikhail Aleshin. As for Andy Soucek, he is now unreachable. “ For me, the championship is over. But I will fight until the end to try to get second place. »

Mikhail Aleshin, second in the championship, was very happy to have won a race that he did not think he could finish. “ It was one of the hardest races of my life. I had a problem with the gearbox and I could no longer downshift properly. But I knew how to attack and not make mistakes to obtain this victory. » This success places the Russian in second place in the championship. While Andy Soucek almost won the title, this second place will be the objective to achieve for the other drivers.
