By choosing to extend the current chassis of the F3 European Championship which will therefore be present until 2019, the FIA is seeking to limit the surge in costs.
The regulations will also prohibit from next year the use of aero elements not coming from the chassis manufacturer, making the wind tunnels used, for example, by Prema Powerteam useless. The teams will also have to use the same brake discs.
“The general economy in car forces us to work on the values of the Championship for drivers and teams”, comments Stefano Domenicali, president of the FIA Single-Seater Commission.
“With these changes incorporated into the technical regulations, we believe we have achieved an important step in the objective of reducing costs in the F3 European Championship while increasing the level of the field. All teams will start on the same basis. This year's trend that shows every team can win races must continue.", adds the former director of the Team Ferrari.
“We want to maintain the level and professionalism of the teams in place, but also open the door to new structures in the discipline. It shouldn't make a difference which team a driver runs for. Everyone must have a chance to win races and play for the title”, specifies the Italian.
The FIA will therefore impose severe constraints in order to reduce the performance gap between the teams. Prema Powerteam currently seems to be knocking out the competition with a 56-point lead over its closest rival HitechGP with three meetings to go before the end of the season.
