FR Eurocup-C1 – Ugo de Wilde first winner at Monza

For the first race of the new Formulas Renault Eurocup, it was a rookie at this level who won this Saturday at the Autodromo de Monza in Italy.

The Belgian Ugo de Wilde (JD Motorsport) offered himself a first success this season in the discipline, after enjoying a perfect start when the lights went out, and after having mastered the entire race.

Beaten by Lorenzo Colombo (MP Motorsport) in qualifying this morning, de Wilde took his revenge at the start, overtaking Colombo in the first meters.

But the potential duel between the two rivals was quickly cut short, as Colombo was sent into a spin in the first chicane of the Italian circuit, probably hit from behind. The safety car is deployed to evacuate the car n°12 of MP Motorsport, stopped in the chicane.

On the restart, de Wilde controls his takeoff well and precedes his teammate Leonardo Lorandi and Kush Maini (M2 Competition). Behind this group, Oscar piastri (R-ace GP) found himself battling with Victor Martins (MP Motorsport) and the Frenchman took the lead for fourth place, followed by Federico Malvestiti (Bhaitech).

In the lead, while the duel continues between de Wilde and Lorandi, the Italian makes a small error by going off-trajectory at the exit of Lesmo 2 20′ from the finish, and lets de Wilde escape. The order will not change until the finish for the top 3.

The fight for fourth place, however, was much more intense, since positions were exchanged between Martins, Piastri and Malvestiti. It was ultimately Martins who finished just off the podium ahead of Malvestiti, Piastri having been forced to return to the pits to change his front wing after contact with Malvestiti.

Sunday will see the Formula Renault Eurocup competitors compete in a second qualifying session tomorrow morning, before the second race of the weekend scheduled for 13:30 p.m.
