Formula 2 is reborn

This weekend opens in Valencia the 2009 season of Formula 2. After nearly 25 years of absence, the series resurfaces and presents itself as a new promotional formula. Based on chassis designed by Williams and 450 horsepower Audi engines, Formula 2 seems to have all the cards in hand to offer a credible alternative to the GP2 Series, a real antechamber of the Formula 1.

Moreover, Jonathan Palmer, the director of the series, is very optimistic. “ The return of Formula 2 is a significant milestone in the history of motorsport. There is no doubt that the FIA's desire to create a prestigious new championship at a reasonable price comes at the right time. » The cost Palmer is talking about should be around 250 euros for a season. The champion will be offered a Formula 000 test within the Williams team.

The participants in this new championship will be twenty-five to set off this weekend to try to add their name to the prize list of the Valencian event. An unmistakable indicator of the quality of the series is the level of the plateau for this first year of existence. Thus, among the 25 entrants, we find drivers who have already proven themselves in various national championships but also international ones such as the Formula 3, the F3 Euro Series, the Formula Renault 3.5 or GP2 to name a few.

Even if it is difficult to venture into hypothetical predictions, it will still be appropriate to follow the Frenchman Julien Jousse, second in the FR 3.5 championship last year, the British Jason Moore, champion in Formula Palmer 2008 or the ?Italian Mirko Botolotti, F3 Italy champion. Among the entrants we also find some prestigious names like Henry Surtees, the son of John, the only driver to have won the world championship on two and four wheels or Alex Brundle, the son of the former Formula 1 driver, Martin Brundle.
