F3 weekend in Budapest at a glance

The man of the weekend: Dennis Hauger (Prema)

We tend to repeat ourselves race after race, but the Norwegian is definitely the boss of this championship. In Hungary, he delighted the spectators with several overtakes that were very well felt from the outside. His second place in qualifying, and his victory in the main race, while the competition was still losing ground, allowed him to have a 63-point lead before the last three rounds of the season. It's hard to imagine who could go looking for him now...

The disappointment of the weekend: Victor Martins (MP Motorsport)

Author of a very good start to the season to the point of moving to second place in the championship after the second meeting, Victor Martins had two complicated rounds in Austria and Hungary. On the pace at Spielberg but unlucky, the Habs had their worst weekend at the Hungaroring, scoring absolutely no points. Not helped by the lack of rhythm of his car MP Motorsport throughout the three days, the Habs started from too far away to hope for anything (24th). But a stall on the grid in Race 2 and an error at the start of Race 3 on a wet track doomed his chances. For the talented French driver, the rebound is expected at Spa-Francorchamps (August 30) in a month.

Video of the weekend: Hauger overtaking Leclerc in Race 3

While he had perfectly resisted the repeated attacks of his teammate Dennis Hauger a lap earlier, Arthur Leclerc ended up giving in to the championship leader. The Norwegian, in complete control, performed a very intelligent and very controlled overtake from the outside by rolling around the Monegasque for victory on the 8th lap.

Fact of the weekend: the fear of the Cohen-Toth collision in race 3

We could have talked about Frederik Vesti's new retirement due to a mechanical problem in Race 1 and his totally ruined Saturday, but an accident really gave us chills. This Sunday in race 3, Ido Cohen (Carlin) found himself going the wrong way on the track after a collision with Rafael Villagomez (HWA Racelab). Except that Lazslo Toth (Campos) arrived blind and hit the Israeli to the point of getting into his car. No injuries to report, but we prefer not to even think about what could have happened if the halo had not protected Cohen. New proof, if ever there was one, of the effectiveness of this protection for pilots.

The number :

2

This is the number of drivers who achieved their first victory in Formula 3 this week-end. Ayumu Iwasa (Hitech) was indeed declared the winner of Race 1 after the five-second penalty inflicted on Lorenzo Colombo (Campos), who crossed the line first. Matteo Nannini (HWA Racelab), who performs the double program F2/F3, unlocked his counter in race 2.

The French weekend:

Clément Novalak: 4th in C1, 8th in C2, 5th in C3
Victor Martins: 15th in C1, 25th in C2, 27th in C3
Reshad de Gerus: 24th in C1, 18th C2, 20th in C3

The statement of the weekend: Arthur Leclerc (Prema)

The Monegasque created a surprise by taking pole position in Hungary on Friday. Having had a difficult start to the season before that, Charles' brother explained that he had struggled to contain his emotions until then:

“At the start of the season, I put too much pressure on myself, because I love this sport and I want to succeed. Except that when you put too much emotion into what you do, you inevitably leave feathers. It’s a sport in which the management of emotions is enormous,” Arthur Leclerc.
