Sophia Flörsch: “First positive signs” after her operation

The first news seems reassuring concerning Sophia Flörsch who underwent surgery this Monday, November 19 following her serious accident last weekend at the Macau GP.

The Van Amersfoort Racing team announced that tests showed that the nervous system was responding well and that the first signs were positive regarding his convalescence.

The team specified that the operation, which consisted in particular of treating a fracture of the 7th vertebra of the spine, had lasted no less than 9 hours. The medical team from the Conde S. Januario Hospital in Macau also had to remove bone debris which was a source of danger by being located near the column.

Frits van Amersfoort, team principal of the eponymous team which fielded Flörsch, told the BBC that the operation “went very well” and that there was “no fear of paralysis”.

“It was our biggest fear, he elaborated. It is for this reason that the surgical intervention had to be carried out quickly because there was a risk of injury to his spine. We are very happy that she is continuing her recovery after an operation that went very well.”

Van Amersfoort says he is convinced that his driver will do everything to return to competition. “It’s in our DNA as motor racing enthusiasts. We always want to come back because we love this sport. Winter is coming so she will have time to recover.”
