Vietoris takes flight

In 2008, Chistian Vietoris had to wait until the fourth weekend of competition and the eighth race to glean his first and only victory of the season. This year, the twenty-year-old German did not want to wait that long. Starting in pole position, the Mücke Motorsport driver did not let go of the lead of the race, winning after 31 laps of the EuroSpeedway in Lausitz. Second at the start, Henkie Waldschmidt was unable to maintain his position, being quickly overtaken by Roberto Merhi. Like Vietoris, the Spaniard then knew how to protect his position, staying a short distance from the leader and resisting pressure from Sam Bird.

Brendon Hartley finished at the foot of the podium. The pilot testing Red Bull F1, who got off to a bad start in this race, was then able to quickly move into the leading pack, unlike Valtteri Bottas and Jules Bianchi. Seventh and eighth on the grid, the two ART GP drivers finished far from the points, behind Jean-Karl Vernay, who was also not finished. In the points, however, we find Mika Mäki, the driver of the French team Signature, who managed to glean sixth place after starting from afar. Adrien Tambay was less lucky, finishing seventh, just outside the points, less than two seconds behind Mäki. The Frenchman can, however, be pleased to finish the race as the first rookie.

In the general classification, the three drivers finishing on the podium did the right thing with a view to the championship. If Jules Bianchi retains his first place with 18 points, he sees Vietoris, Merhi and Bird getting closer. The latter, very consistent, is second with 16 points, just like the Spaniard. The winner of the day, Christian Vietoris, is fifth with 14 points, one point ahead of the Frenchman Jean-Karl Vernay.
