Volkswagen will end its commitment to F3

Volkswagen has announced that it will cease its engine manufacturing activities in F3 at the end of the 2018 season, when the discipline will experience a significant evolution by replacing the GP3 Series.

“Volkswagen has set impressive records in F3, underlines Sven Smeets, director of VW Motorsport. Volkswagen drivers and teams have enjoyed great success over the past three decades against other manufacturers and we are grateful. We will continue to offer the same support to our customers this season in the fight for the F3 European Championship and the FIA F3 World Cup Macau. »

The Wolfsburg manufacturer will take the opportunity to focus on its other commitments in motorsport, notably the development of the Golf GTI TCR and the Polo GTI R5.

“We intend to further strengthen the links between the brand's production cars, adds Sven Smeets. The Golf GTI TCR is already a strong representative in several series around the world and we intend to achieve the same result with the Polo GTI R5. These two cars are not only attractive propositions for professional customer teams, they are also top tier mounts for talented young people. »

“With regional, national and international series in which the Golf GTI TCR and the Polo GTI R5 are present, we will allow young drivers to develop step by step while remaining behind the wheel of a Volkswagen,” underlines the director of VW Motorsport.

The Polo is also present in Rallycross, notably in World RX with Petter Solberg's PSRX team who won the title last year with Johan Kristoffersson. Volkswagen is also rising an electrical project with Romain Dumas to try to beat Sébastien Loeb's record at Pikes Peak (Colorado) on June 24.
