FR Eurocup-C2: Smolyar dominates Martins in the rain at Monza

Alexander Smolyar (R-ace GP) will have been the master of the rain this Sunday at Monza for the second race of the opening of the Formula Renault Eurocup 2019.

The Russian won the event contested in difficult conditions in Italy, ahead of the Frenchman Victor Martins (MP Motorsport) and Lorenzo Colombo (MP Motorsport), who made up for it well after his premature elimination the day before.

The start of the race was very logically given under safety car regime, as the water splashes offered little visibility on the track. A procedure which will last a little less than ten minutes, before the Safety Car releases the peloton for the first time.

Pole sitter Smolyar then retained the advantage over Colombo, while an incident occurred further on at the start of the Parabolica, eliminating Alessio Deledda (GRS) and Patrick Schott (FA Racing by Drivex).

Another driver prematurely eliminated, Ugo de Wilde (JD Motorsport), winner yesterday in race 1, who did not go through the first chicane. The safety car was called onto the track again, taking time to evacuate all the damaged cars.

After seven minutes of neutralization, the competitors were released by the Safety Car and Smolyar once again succeeded in containing Colombo's attacks. The latter, however, was surprised by Martins when braking for the first chicane.

The event was however neutralized following the exit from the track of Yves Baltas (M2 Competition), Callan O'Keeffe (FA Racing by Drivex) and Brad Benavides (FA Racing by Drivex).

With just over two minutes remaining on the clock, Smolyar restarted the peloton for a third time and perfectly resisted Martins' attack. The Russian ultimately won ahead of the French and Colombo, the top 5 being completed by Oscar piastri (R-ace GP) and Kush Maini (M2 Competition).
