The new F2 revealed

Imagined by Max Mosley, the President of the International Automobile Federation, the championship of Formula 2 aims to be an alternative to the GP2 Series, but at a lower cost. The objective is therefore the same: to lead young pilots towards Formula 1. With this in mind, the winner will therefore be entitled to a test in F1 within the team. Williams, the same one who designed the chassis of this F2.

Frank Williams is firmly convinced that F2 can compete with GP2: “I think that with the 450 horsepower offered by the 4-cylinder turbo Audi, the car also deserves respect,” declared the Englishman. “People will now pay attention to two categories, with F2 and GP2. »

Patrick Head, long-time partner of Frank Williams, shares the same enthusiasm: “It was a technical challenge to design a simple car with good performance. We didn't want it to be too complex and too expensive, but still produce a lot of downforce. I am convinced that it will be perfect for this championship. »

The obvious link between this F2 and the single-seaters used in Formula Palmer since 1997 can be explained by the fact that the car had been in the works for a long time, well before the announcement of the creation of the Formula 2 championship. , Jonathan Palmer had already commissioned Williams to replace aging cars.
