Contested on the sidelines of the German Touring Championship (DTM), the W Series, which appeared in 2019, prefers to take a break before, the organizers hope, to bounce back in 2021. Already, the scenario of a cancellation was taking shape when the DTM had unveiled a significantly modified calendar this Wednesday, June 3:
“We note that the DTM has announced the visit of three countries in 2020. As an international championship, we are still analyzing our options with the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), the F1 and the DTM while the Covid-19 situation remains so unpredictable globally. »
This Thursday, June 4, it was the Italian media Italia Racing which anticipated the news, the W Series based on Tatuus chassis and Italian Autotecnica engines. In the middle of the afternoon, Catherine Bond Muir, the CEO of the discipline, cut short the rumors.
“Our decision not to hold races until 2021 was not taken lightly. Now that we have done this, we let's turn our attention and energy towards 2021, when we return to an even bigger and better track program than before,” she assures.
“Delivering an international calendar required by the W Series in order to spread the message of women's inclusion throughout the world while putting the health of drivers and staff at the top of priorities requires resources that a new start does not have. -up such as the W Series. »
According to her, we should see the glass half full rather than being alarmed by this temporary absence. To wait, a virtual series will be set up (the W Series Esports League), but above all, the single-seater championship has already the assurance of surrender at the Circuit of the Americas on the sidelines of United States Grand Prix and in Mexico for Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix in 2021.
The British Jamie Chadwick thus remains to this day the one and only champion of the W Series.
