A “light” F3 approaching

Recently, Stefano Domenicali, president of the commission car at the FIA, and future president of Lamborghini, had indicated that he wanted to launch so-called regional championships of F3, to reshape the pyramid of categories between the F4 series and the F3 European Championship and not lose young talents along the way, unable to access the European series, due to lack of budget or sufficient experience in the eyes of the teams.

An idea today that continues to progress. “The World Council approved the idea of a new series, which will be called “F3 Light”, which will be organized on a regional basis, explains the Italian on the FIA website.

With the growing success of F4 domestically around the world, this has created something of a bottleneck for young talent coming out of F4. It's a big jump to go from a series that has around 250-300 drivers around the world to our FIA European F3 Championship which can only take a tenth of that number.

Another advantage of the arrival of this intermediate category would be to enhance the prestige of the FIA F3 European Championship, which will then represent excellence both in terms of numbers and on a technical level. »

The single-seaters used would have a more sophisticated chassis than in F4, and would feature an engine similar to that used today in F3 but limited in power. The budget needed to register would be between that required for F4 and that of European F3, according to Stefano Domenicali. The aim is to introduce this category in 2017.
