In addition to a slight modification to the calendar caused by the cancellation of the Argentine Grand Prix, the Moto3 and Moto2 world championships will see their weekends transformed during the 2024 season. The modification seems slight, but will certainly have a significant impact on the preparation of drivers for the Sunday race.
If last year, the drivers of both categories had to worry about the classification of the first practice session, since this governed access or not to the second part of qualifying, this will no longer be the case this year. The lack of time given to teams to work on their weekend without worrying about the pressure of the clock has resulted in the addition of a free practice session on Friday morning, which will not count towards the qualifying session.
Moto3 will have 35 minutes of riding, which will be followed by 40 minutes for Moto2, where it will not be decisive to appear in the top 14. The rest of the weekend will take place as before with sessions of 35 or 40 minutes on Friday afternoon, now called 'Practice 1', and a 30-minute session on Saturday morning, renamed 'Practice 2'.
With such a change, it is very likely that the new Pirelli soft tires will be kept for these tests 1 and 2, which will in turn indeed govern the qualifying sessions which will take place alongside those of the MotoGP.
