The 2020 Azores Rally is canceled

Already postponed for several months due to the coronavirus, the Rally Azores 2020, which was to take place from September 17 to 19, has been definitively canceled. The 55th edition of the event located in the Portuguese archipelago was to mark the third meeting of the European Rally Championship (ERC).

The Commercial Sports Group, at the head of the event, had nevertheless planned an overhaul of the rally in the context of the pandemic of Covid-19 this summer. Alas, it was not enough. “This cancellation is due to lack of human and material resources necessary for the organization behind closed doors, indicates the press release, published Monday August 24.

The security of participants would have been endangered in the most important promotional event in the region, as well as that of the Azoreans. However, their health has always been of the utmost importance to the rally organizers. »

The Azores Rally is, however, expected to feature in the 2021 ERC season under an agreement between Eurosport Events, the championship promoter, and the organizers until 2022. The 2020 European campaign now only counts five rounds, three of which remain to be contested (Cyprus, October 16-18, Hungary, November 6-8 and the Canary Islands, November 26-28).
