Before battling it out during this SS1, the competitors were able to fine-tune their settings during the shakedown and qualifying session organized in the morning. With enormous experience on the island, Luis Monzon (56 years old) was the fastest ahead of Simone Campedelli and Efren Llarena, the winner of the last round in the Azores. For their 3e participation in this event, Yoann Bonato and Benjamin Boulloud were ranked 7es. THE rally then set off into the sunset with a super special stage near the city center of Las Palmas. At the end of this short 1,5 km SS, Simon Wagner established himself as the first leader of the race. The Austrian beat Alberto Battistolli (Fabia) by 0s7 and Nil Solans (Polo) by 0s9. With his C3 Rally2, Bonato ranked 5e at 1s6. At the wheel of his Alpine A110, Manu Guigou took the 9e place (2s) and Raphaël Astier was 2s6 behind. The serious things will begin tomorrow with a loop of 3 special stages to be run twice, i.e. 95,02 km timed.
