Extreme H, the hydrogen championship launched by Extreme E

After the electric with the Formula E or the Extreme E, Alejandro Agag wants to switch to hydrogen. Father of new green competitions, the Spaniard, via Extreme E, wishes to launch the hydrogen version of the SUV championship: Extreme H.

« The Extreme E was designed to be a test bed for innovation. A solution for mobility, explains Alejandro Agag before the launch of the second season. It became increasingly clear to us to create a series around hydrogen. It’s a natural evolution of our mission. It consists of showing the possibilities of new technologies to combat climate problems. »

The challenges of Extreme E are clear: competing across the world while warning about climate issues. Specific objectives and means of communication are used to promote carbon-neutral and eco-responsible competition.

Many solutions are still being studied with the teams involved. Particularly on the introduction of this new initiative. The choices are multiple: two distinct categories, a complete transition or a common race. “ Extreme E is an FIA international series. We intend to work closely again with the FIA and the Automobile Club de Monaco on the development of the Extreme H. Sport is the fastest and most effective platform to drive innovation. Additionally, by using Extreme E’s existing platform, we can also use our transportation, talent and operations to ensure we minimize our carbon footprint.”

In addition, the cars used in Extreme H will retain the same characteristics as those of Extreme E. The only difference will be the fuel cell which will replace the battery as the main source of energy. Thus, natural resources will power these batteries, such as solar energy or water as is already the case in Extreme E to recharge the batteries.

« The evolution from Extreme E to Extreme H is very exciting and represents a brilliant new step in the evolution of the series, comments Jenson Button, boss of his own team, JBXE. Seeing races like this powered by hydrogen fuel cells is remarkable. »Same story from Nasser Al-Attiyah, Cupra XE driver: “ I think it's a good idea to have a new championship running on hydrogen. I hope everyone will benefit from it and it will also be interesting for manufacturers. »

The development of the first prototype of the Extreme H is already underway with a view to launching it in early 2023.
