Mark Martin won the first of the last ten races of the season and begins the title race. The veteran won his fifth race of the season and moved into the lead in the general classification, ahead of Jimmie Johnson and Juan Pablo Montoya, who led a third of the race. Martin was able to resist, in the last laps, the repeated attacks of the Colombian, who has still not obtained his first victory but who is ideally placed in the ranking.
