Sam Bird (Mücke Motorsport) snatched the best time in Hockenheim qualifying on a dry track in 1'33, despite a few wet marks off the lines. In the final minutes when everyone logically put on a set of new Kumho tires, the Briton blew away the pole position held for a few minutes by Stefano Coletti. Both use the engine Mercedes.

The Monegasque's performance demonstrates the good form of the Italian team Prema Powerteam, as confirmed by the surprising 6th time of the Lebanese Basil Shaaban.

3rd, Mika Mäki signed the best performance of the Volkswagen engines, Jean-Karl Vernay his teammate at Signature obtaining the 9th fastest time.

First to hold pole with his second train, Jules Bianchi (ART Grand Prix) had to settle for 5th place behind Roberto Merhi (Manor).

Disappointing first qualification for Adrien Tambay and Alexandre Marsoin, 24th and 25th respectively.
