Esteban Ocon (Prema Powerteam) takes pole for Race 1 at the Pau Grand Prix by winning his duel against Max Verstappen (Van Amersfoort Racing) with whom he was in the same group. By setting a time of 1'10"072 in the last lap, the leader of the Championship beat his Dutch rival by 24 thousandths. The rest of the drivers were unable to follow as evidenced by the third time achieved by Jake Dennis (Carlin) who was half a second behind. Lucas Auer (Mücke Motorsport) will start on the front row after setting the best time in the first group.
