Marco Wittmann seemed capable of offering Signature another success, after taking the lead at the start. A first safety car was required, Roberto Merhi having stalled on the grid and being hit by several cars including that of Stanaway, Vanthoor also being in the pile-up.
At the restart, Wittmann led in front Bottas in a fight with Nasr. In the 4th round, their duel was fatal to the Finn who damaged his suspension in Lisboa while trying to pass the Brazilian. After a second intervention by the safety car, Wittmann was overtaken by Juncadella, Nasr and two other rivals. He was going to pass Van Asseldonk and Sekiguchi again, but had to settle for 3rd place on the podium. The Spaniard from Prema Powerteam was leading in front of the Carlin driver when a new incident in Lisboa again called for the safety car, the finish being validated under his regime.
