Craig Breen (Peugeot 208 T16 R5) experienced a catastrophic start to the event at the Jännerrallye (Austria) since the Irishman went off the road on the first special, the 1km long SS19 Pierbach. Jonathan Hirschi, also in a 208 T16 R5, was able to reach the finish but his car suffered significant damage to the front after three spins.

Kajetan Kajetanowicz (Ford Fiesta R5) is the first leader of the event with six seconds ahead of Robert Consani (Peugeot 207 S2000). Jaromir Tarabus (Skoda Fabia S2000) follows, already more than a minute late. Martin Fischeriehner (Mitsubishi Lancer Evo IX) made light of the snow, finishing fourth ahead of Hermann Neubauer (Fiesta S2000). Jean-Michel Raoux (Fiesta R5) is in the top ten, almost three minutes behind the leader of the race.
