Ott Tänak (Toyota) lost around twenty seconds in the Sapphire special, 20th SS of the Rally Australia. The Estonian went off the road in a tight left turn which also trapped Craig Breen (Citroën). The Yaris WRC has damage to the front right but this does not seem to affect performance.
Hayden Paddon (Hyundai) was the fastest, completing the 19,27km in 11'30''2, 7 tenths ahead of Jari-Matti Latvala (Toyota). Mads Ostberg (Citroën), Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) and Elfyn Evans (M-Sport) followed just over 3 seconds behind. Sébastien Ogier (M-Sport) continues to manage by dropping a little more than 2 seconds to his Belgian rival.
Jari-Matti Latvala regained the lead of Rally Australia with a 5-second lead over Ott Tänak, but Hayden Paddon closed to within a dozen seconds of the Estonian. Mads Ostberg now has a dozen seconds ahead of Esapekka Lappi (Toyota). Sébastien Ogier remains 6th ahead of Elfyn Evans who still has more than 21 seconds ahead of Thierry Neuville. Teemu Suninen (M-Sport) and Craig Breen (Citroën) complete the Top 10.
Mikkelsen set the 6th fastest time, 4 seconds behind Paddon.
Tänak failed 18s behind Paddon and more than 17s behind Latvala. The Toyota is damaged on the front right. Latvala regains the lead for 5 seconds. “The plan is to stay ahead of Paddon. »
Latvala is closest to Paddon with 7 tenths behind. The Finn should regain the lead of the rally with the error of his teammate who lost around twenty seconds. “The grip is constantly changing, you have to constantly read the road. We'll see what we do because Paddon isn't far away. »
Tänak made a mistake in the special. The Toyota driver can return to the road after ending up in the bushes. Latvala should regain the lead with the time lost by the Estonian.
Paddon keeps a high pace with a 3″2 lead over Ostberg. The Hyundai driver seeks to stay in contact with Latvala. “We try to have a good pace to maintain the pressure but we also try not to get caught. It is not finished yet. »
Ostberg takes the provisional scratch with 2 tenths ahead of Neuville. Lappi dropped 5″5 and found himself 12s behind 4th place occupied by the Citroën driver. “I learned a little after the previous special. I can control the car better. I might lose a little time when it slips but I'm not making any mistakes at the moment. »
Lappi sets the 4th time, 5″3 behind Neuville. The Toyota driver is still aiming for 4th position from Ostberg. “I can't focus on Ostberg today, we focus on the team. I have to keep Seb behind me. » The Frenchman is still more than 43 seconds behind the Finn.
Lappi and Ostberg are on the same pace in the special. The Toyota driver, however, almost went off the road in the corner where Breen made his first mistake.
Ogier resisted well with 2″5 behind Neuville. The Belgian is still more than 42 seconds behind the M-Sport driver in the general classification. “The last few km are drier but it’s not a relaxing morning. »
Evans only gives up 3 tenths on Neuville and maintains a lead of more than 21 seconds over the Belgian. “The conditions are very complicated with grip that changes a lot. »
Neuville improves Suninen’s time by 22″3. The Hyundai driver is very disappointed with his performance given the discussions with his co-driver Nicolas Gilsoul. His Hyundai is damaged at the rear. “I lost around ten seconds in a tight corner where the others went out. I couldn't leave the lines and had to reverse. A lot will definitely happen. »
Evans is less than a second behind Neuville in the 2nd intermediate.
Suninen improves Breen's time by 7s. The M-Sport driver is isolated in 9th row. “It’s hard with this grip that’s constantly changing. I have to stay focused. This is not easy for a discovery in Australia. »
Breen signs the first reference in 12'02″9. The Citroën driver suffered in this SS. “It was disastrous. This ES is harder than the previous one. »
Serderidis reached the finish in 14'31″4. Neuville is currently the fastest with 13 seconds ahead of Breen in 2nd intermediate.
Breen made another mistake. The Citroën driver spun after sliding.
Breen got trapped in a slow, slippery left turn. The Citroën driver stalled and lost a handful of seconds. Serderidis was also able to resume the special.
