The fight for the title between Masson and Capietto turned upside down after a twist

While we thought that Esteban Masson would arrive at the final of Magny-Cours with 4 points ahead of Macéo Capietto after counting the worst meeting of each in F4 France, it is ultimately tied that the two leaders of the championship will arrive in Nièvre. Get out your calculators!

We warn you right away, to understand what follows, it is better to have done Maths Sup! The F4 France ranking is in fact not the easiest to understand, and the latest twist of this 2021 season will not help anything. To award its champion title, the FFSA counts the worst meeting of each driver, which originally placed Esteban Masson ahead of Macéo Capietto by four small points before the last round of the year which will take place this weekend in Magny -Courses (October 22-24).

During the first round of the year at Nogaro, due to a mechanical problem on his car during the formation round of the C1, Macéo Capietto had in fact only taken part in two races out of the three planned and had therefore experienced his worst weekend of the year in accounting terms. It was therefore this event which was subtracted from his total points (21), while Esteban Masson saw his points deducted from Monza (10), where only two races had taken place due to climatic inconveniences.

203 points each, but…

In these conditions, Masson was four points ahead of Capietto. But an appeal filed by a driver has somewhat changed the picture of the championship. Indeed, following the appeal, the legal department of the FFSA re-examined its regulations and concluded that there had been an error in reading the regulations in the rankings published after Monza and Le Castellet. Indeed, the drivers must have taken part in the three races of a meeting for it to be counted. Thus, it is no longer the meetings of Nogaro for Capietto and Monza for Masson which are subtracted from their totals, but the round of Magny-Cours (40 pts) for Macéo, and that of Lédenon (33 pts) for Esteban.

With a direct consequence: the gap after counting is therefore reduced by four points, and the two title contenders both have 203 points (after counting) before going to the last meeting of the year in Nièvre. To be titled, Esteban Masson will have to score at least 41 points (which he has managed to do 4 out of 6 times this year), that is to say fill his tally (33) + the seven points which separate him from his rival before counting, while scoring more than Capietto. The latter, on the other hand, will be titled if his rival Masson scores less than 41 units, or if he scores more points than him. One thing is immutable and much easier to understand, however: to be titled, you will have to go fast, be in good shape, and stay out of the trouble!
