Understand everything at the 2022 FIA Motorsport Games

The FIA Motorsport Games will take place from October 26 to 30 © FIA

After the postponement of the 2020 and 2021 editions for obvious reasons linked to Covid, the FIA Motorsport Games will return from October 26 to 30, in Marseille. The FIA took advantage of the French Grand Prix and its visibility to detail in detail the outlines of the next edition of the Motosport Games, which are set to become, in the future, the Olympic Games of motorsport. Marseille is officially the host city, it will also host the opening ceremony, but the three main sites will be the Paul-Ricard circuit for the circuit activities, Sainte-Baume for the specials of rally, and Veynes for the rallycross

While the event only had six disciplines during the first edition in 2019, this time there will be eighteen. The GT will obviously have a very special place there, since SRO (Stephane Ratel Organisation) is the promoter. There will indeed be a category for professional drivers so that high-sounding names can participate and bring their aura, but also pro-AM drivers, and an LMP3 category. As in 2019, the car will be represented by Formula 4, while drifting and touring will also be there.

A general and continental ranking

As regards the karting, it was previously only a slalom course. It will now be a category in its own right, with races in OK Senior and OK Junior. While 41 nations were represented during the first edition, around 80 are expected in 2022. The countries concerned will have to create a national team, and choose a single driver per category. The final objective will obviously be to win the overall trophy, but regional rankings will allow countries to compete by continent.

The only problem for the organization is that the Motorsport Games will take place on the same weekend as the United States Grand Prix. Formula 1. The FIA once thought it would be postponed by a week, but ultimately considered that this would create confusion given previous postponements over the past two years. The financing part of the test will obviously need to be clarified. SRO and the FIA will invest in the event and its organization, but drivers and/or federations will have to find the funds to participate. Sponsors will in fact be authorized, as long as the flag remains most visible on the car. We are not yet at the Olympic Games, but this at least has the merit of moving in the right direction.
