Berthon: “These new LMP2s are a very good thing”

How did your tests go on the new Panis Barthez Competition Ligier JS P217?

It went very well. We were able to complete our program, which is a great performance given the numerous interruptions, and we had no major technical problems. These new LMP2s are a very good thing. They are very fast and a real pleasure to ride. Traffic is also easier to manage because you can pass slower cars more easily. It's difficult to establish a hierarchy between the new LMP2 chassis at the moment, but we didn't try to set a time given that this is practically our first test session.

Is the Monza track suitable for testing?

It’s an older generation circuit that looks quite similar to that of the 24h of Le Mans. I'm not a fan of this route, but it at least allows me to progress. Afterwards, it is certain that this circuit does not forgive the slightest error and overtaking maneuvers are dangerous. Traffic management is complicated, very high speeds are reached, and it's even harder for rookies.

Do you have a problem with the identical engine maps between the LMP2s?

It would certainly be preferable to have greater freedom at this level. It is on such parameters that the big teams can make the difference. As for a possible balance of performance in the LMP2s, it could already be done at crew level because some drivers benefit from a smaller build than mine.

Are more tests planned before the season opener at Silverstone on the weekend of April 15?

We will do a test session on the Monday before the race at Silverstone. It’s a very good thing that the team was able to put this in place. I hope it doesn't rain, even though it often does. At least we can hope that it doesn't snow like last year in WEC !
